Two Evils
"For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."
Jeremiah 2:13
If given the option between two diametrically opposed situations, all of us would choose that which is best. If given the choice between wealth and poverty, we would choose wealth. If given the choice between sickness and health, we would all choose good health. If the choice was between life and death, certainly everyone would choose life over death. If this is truth in our physical lives, then why is it not also true in our spiritual lives?
God through the prophet Jeremiah brought an indictment against His people. He charged them with the folly of forsaking Him, the source of all satisfaction, for that which was empty and useless. All who come to Jesus Christ find a fountain of living water that if we drink, we will never thirst again (John 4:14). Yet, there are many today who are seeking their satisfaction in broken cisterns that cannot hold water. What are these broken cisterns to whom many are coming?
Some are coming to the cistern of worldly pleasure, while some are seeking satisfaction in material possessions. Some are seeking acclaim, while still others are running after adventure. Some believe that the answer lies in formal religion, while others think that the answers are found in formal education. Yet all who seek their satisfaction in these things find them to be empty and all to be in vain.
Beloved, learn from those that have gone before you. Turn and seek only Him who is able to satisfy the longing of your soul. Come and drink of the fountain of living water and have your parched spirit quenched.
